What's In Kendall's Box??? DJ DRC Ballin' Live!

For those of you not familiar with DJ DRC, frankly, I find that very sad. She is one of the most talented, genuine folk I've had the pleasure of working with - and also one of the premier party rockin' female DJ/Producer's in the U.S.. Some of you who visit my blog, I know for a fact, have been a fan of hers for years. For this installment of "What's In Kendall's Box???", I share with you a mix I am listening to RIGHT NOW via the good ol' Soundcloud. I picked this puppy up from the Facebook feed and am jammin' away as I bang out my work today! Click on the link below my box to give it a listen yourself! I hope you enjoy it as much as I am!

Sharing Is Caring....

Wow. So today I was going through my e mails, voicemails and facebook, catching up on things, and I noticed that Jerick Hoffer, aka Jinkx Monsoon, whom I recently had the pleasure of meeting at the Art + Action = Awareness event for the latest issue of Hard Times Press, had left some videos on my Facebook. I don't usually indulge in watching videos on the internet during office hours because, to be honest, with my A.D.D., it quickly turns into a tangent and I've lost my entire day. Today, I took an exception, and I'M SO G.L.A.A.D. I did! Won't you take a moment to share a smile with me????

(You have to click through on the links, because when I tried to embed the videos, it posted equally hilarious, but different Jinkx Monsoon vids than what I am referencing.)

Monsoon Season: Don't get M.A.D.D. get G.L.A.A.D. (Pt. 2 of 2)

You're so glad you did, right?!?! Happy Monday folks! Let the games begin!

Where The Hell Was I??? ....And Where Will I Be?

Where the hell was I? That's what I was asking myself last night. It was my sons (yes, I'm a step momma in my alternate life, it's not all parties and DJing), all city choir concert here in the country. So me and the wifey got him there an hour before the concert started so he could acclimate with the other kids, and we took our seats to wait for the show to start. Which gave us an hour of downtime. While my lady spent her time giving running fashion commentary on everyone coming through the doors as if it was the acadamy awards, I was plagued by the country music they decided to blast (so I desperately threw on the ear buds and started streaming Randi Rhodes on AM 1090 through my phone to block it out).

Sometimes it's a strange experience for me, to be immersed in my alter-life, surrounded by "country culture" as opposed to the "queer culture" I am so rooted in. As people were streaming in and taking their seats in any manner of dress and appearance (logging boots, Wal-Mart fashions), I found myself imagining the Guerilla Go-Gos' dancing in, bodies painted, hot little booty shorts on, or Jackie Hell stumbling through the door in her finest hour. You get the idea. It made me smile to imagine these worlds clashing.

It was cute though, even if our kid was the only one NOT participating in the dances learned to accompany the song his choir was singing. He was nervous. He admitted as much to me early in the evening. Give him a break, right? The highlight, which I have a video of to share with you, at some point (when You Tube stops being a bitch), was one of the school's choirs that broke from the "Jazz" programming and did "The Safety Dance". There was the most adorable girl out in front, popping and locking and dancing her little heart out. You would love it, but it's all You Tube's fault that I can't share it right now. So you will have to make due with this cute ass picture the wifey took from her phone, of our boy's choir. He's the handsome Ginger in the middle with the mohawk. So, the answer to my own question, "Where the hell am I???", is simple. Finding some balance in my life enjoying family time. Sigh.

.....And where will I be? Well, I am super excited to attend Comeback's 7th Year Anniversary party tonite. It's been a while since I have been to Comeback as I usually have clashing plans. So tonight it's going to be a real treat to attend this crazy, sweaty, gay-ass party that has been pleasing crowds for 7 consecutive years now. I am also looking forward to seeing my girl Colby B, who I haven't seen since before she moved to NYC. She wrote a bit about her experience for the latest issue of Hard Times, which I will have plenty of on me tonight! Come celebrate this milestone with Comeback and grab your copy of the latest issue of Hard Times tonight at Chop Suey (and read Colby's piece to get the dish on NYC)!

Whatever you do, and wherever you go this weekend, have fun, be safe, and GETIN2IT!

Hard Times Rode Again....And Boy Did It Ever!

For those who came out last Wednesday night to celebrate the release of issue #7 of Hard Times Press, thanks for comin' out and lettin' your freak flag fly with us! We love every last one of you! Bodies were painted, mixes and DJ sets were enjoyed, performances amazed us, pictures were taken, 'zines were consumed....and wait, what was that over there? A little HIV awareness in the mix? Blammy! We got ya! Fun, and a little social awareness! That was our lovely little secret with the launch of the first issue of 2011.

What lovely little secret you ask? Well...we happened upon an incredible partnership thanks to our good friend Robert Yoon who organizes for the HIV Vaccine Trials Unit. Out of this partnership came "Art+Action=Awareness". A wonderful way to mix our forum with an organization who works diligently day in and day out to raise awareness in our community about HIV. Which is still an incredibly deadly disease that plagues not only our community, but many others. There are many great pieces in the 'zine which harken back to the days when HIV/AIDS was killing off some of the most notable artists of our time (and thousands of others). Through Art, and Action, we hope to raise Awareness. This will be a theme you see throughout the year in our humble little 'zine, and across many Hard Times inspired and driven events.

The launch party at R-Place was really an amazing experience for me personally. One best appreciated after the detox I and many others had to suffer through induced by the double poured drinks that R-Place serves up as the norm. Mental note to self: Drink a tall glass of water in between cocktails whenever you go to R-Place. Just sayin'.

Instead of going on and on about how wonderful things were, I thought I would just share a few treats with ya:

THIS FRIDAY!!! Lezbro w/ Miss Oblivious & DJ Riff-Raff At The Wildrose

LEZBRO
A night for fag hags, dyke tykes & fruitflies!
Every 2nd Friday (March 11, 2011)
@ The Wildrose (1021 E. Pike St, Seattle, WA, 98122)
9PM – 2AM $3 Cover CHEAP ASS DRINK SPECIALS!
...21 + W/ID

DJ’s L.A. Kendall & Tony Burns (come wish him a Happy Birthday!), and their eccelctic collaboration, LEZBRO, continues, March 11, 2011. LEZBRO, 2nd Fridays at The Wildrose (1021 E. Pike St., Seattle), is a night for fag hags (ladies that love themselves some gay boys), dyke tykes (guys that pal around with ladies who love ladies) & fruit-flies (straight people that like to hang with the queers)! In short COME AS YOU ARE! The dance floor will be flooded with all kinds of party! There’s something for all!

This month’s installment of LEZBRO features a special DJ Set by the one and only Riff-Raff. Native Hawaiian, Riff-Raff, aka Alea Mahone moved to Seattle at the age of 9. Raised with many creative and cultural influences around her, music and dance has always been an integral part of her life. In 2005, Alea attended a house party at the Leschi Lounge - a progressive after hours. There she met many positive figures in the underground electronic music scene who would soon become some of her very best friends. With such strong musical inspiration around her, Riff-Raff was able to find a creative outlet through DJ'ing. Riff-Raff's musical interests and influences are as diverse as the crowds she captivates. Her sound ranges and blends everything from bass heavy tech house to grimy electro beats. Some of the various parties, places and clubs she's played include Leschi Lounge, Black Rock City, Havana, Hard Times, Grime, Hussler, Fringe, Cherry, and Lick.

Miss Oblivious also joins us to host March’s Lezbro. If we’re all lucky, she’ll let us peep her artwork and/or dolls and possibly even have some available for purchase! Miss Oblivious aka "Cheyanne Payne", a Seattle based dollmaker has also begun to split her time in New Orleans, she has worked with cabarets, stunning punks, circus contraption, tranny granny's in SF, and made many dolls of LA based punk legends from the 70’s. She’s also a haunted photographer capturing the darker side of glamour, her images have been published as far as Japan. In November 2009, The Seattle Times dubber her “official documentarian of the Seattle cabaret”. From 2007-2009 she directed and produced over 9 short films, videos and documentaries through SCAN TV. Miss O can be seen on commercials, HBO's Real Sex Folsom Street(1996),"What we do is secret", Botswana mini series by Joriah Goad, Jackie Hell video "Whore", Pajama Talk episode 7. She also founded and fronted San Jose punk trash band "NAG" from 1999-2003 Miss O has also published zines since 1994 focusing on the queer pioneers, toothless dandies ,glitter puss’s, dustbowl glamour, tuff bois, underground icons, spiritualists, accordion Casanovas, ghost hunters, witch doctors, thrift addicts, pagan enthusiasts, and electronic tramps to name a few. She is also a contributing scene reporter for the world renown and longest published zine “Punk Globe” since 2005. Come see what insanity she brings to our party!

A continuous visual display will be shown each month, compliments of Mr. JT Hooker of 12hr notice.

The Wildrose also offers super economical (and by that, we mean CHEAP) cover charge – a mere $3, as well as some incredibly unbelievable drink specials (varies from night to night). This makes Lezbro hard to pass up! So come early for your pre-funk, stumble in late for your wrap-up, or stay all night and don’t miss a thing – but GET THERE! Lezbro….LET’S GO!

Mark Your Calendars For Grime's Baby Binge Party

Hey Folks!

This Friday is gonna be off the chain at Chapel here in Seattle! So clear your calendars, get yourself some rest, do you due diligence at work, and prepare yourself for a monster hangover on Saturday. Grime's baby Binge Party is going to blow your hair back! I am so excited about this one. First off, I've been scheduled to perform at Grime, a few months back, but the crawling crud of the cold/flu hit me and I had to cancel, which was a total bummer. DJ Skiddle, in all of his fabulousness, rescheduled the date, for THIS COMING FRIDAY. You KNOW I'm gonna BRING IT!

Not only will I be performing, but my good friend B.S. Lewis is in town from New York City to rock the decks. It's been nearly 2 years since I've seen his mug and I couldn't be more excited. He's an incredible DJ and I promise you will dance your ass off! If you can believe this, THAT'S NOT EVEN THE HALF of what's happening at Chapel on Friday! Skiddle will also be tearing it up on the decks, Little Red Radio is slated to perform, rumor has it Sammy LaForge's Fluffers will be in the house, and I also heard something about some aerialists. ...and it's DJ Skiddle's birthday bash! Somebody better come spank his ass! Seriously? Too much fun! I can feel the hangover already...

Here are the details from the press release:

DJ SKIDDLE and The CHAPEL are teaming up to bring you another bangin' edition of the GRIME dance party! As usual, the music will be an unusual juxtaposition of polished pop and hard dirty beats. This month, Skiddle is celebrating his birthdate with a BABY BINGE dance party and he wants you to join him. Chapel will be rolling out their newest flavored vodka shots that night as well, SKITTLE-infused shots! And they're only $3!!! Shoot... the rainbow!

GRIME's resident DJ Skiddle will be joined on the speakers with some VERY SPECIAL guests for a coast-to-coast dance party ROYALE!

-Joining on the decks, BS LEWIS will be creating a crazy electro groove for all you groovy crazies. He and his music are flying in from NYC and his beats are FRESH!

-Next up, LITTLE RED RADIO will be rocking the joint. This Los Angeles band is on tour and is sticking around Seattle a few days to rock out this night. Their song "HOOKIE" has been getting some local radio play and they are a guaranteed DANCEFLOORGASM.

-Finally, LA KENDALL, is not from LA. You know that because you've been dancing to her jams for the past decade all across Seattle at nights like Hot Mess, Hard Times, and Lezbro. For this party, she'll be trading in her headphones for a microphone to belt out a few of her new songs. Recently, LA Kendall released her first solo EP "The Eyes of Laura Kendall" produced by the legendary SAMMY LAFORGE.

-Throughout the night, we'll have surprises popping up all over the place, including a few appearances by Cirque du Trois, a GRAVITY-DEFYING aerial act.

-Alisha Mahone will be giving out COLOR FACIALS.

-And that's just the beginning. Come see the other TRICKS we have up our sleeve!

I Heart DJ Minx

For those of you who have followed me since back in the hitgirl! days, you know who DJ Minx is because you probably came to one, if not more, of a handful of shows that we did with her. I remember the first show we brought her out for, it was at The Baltic Room. She was 7 or 8 months pregnant. I remember the manager of The Baltic Room at the time telling me "Kendall, only you would bring a pregnant DJ who's ready to pop to town". He was right. I was. It was AWESOME! She's been out a half a down times since then. She's incredibly talented and has been such an inspiration to me throughout the years. I feel honored to work with her and to consider her a friend.

A Little Background, Directly From Her Bio....

DJ Minx was inspired to spin by the famed Music Institute in Detroit. Her style is described as funky, powerful house, with a smudge of grace. For two years, Minx engineered and hosted "Deep Space Radio"- an electronic music show on a Detroit’s WGPR radio station. The show was headed by the innovators of techno music: "Magic" Juan Atkins, Kevin “Reese” Saunderson, Eddie Fowlkes, and Derrick May. She played mixes by Kenny "Moodyman" Dixon and Stacy Pullen as well as the show's helmsmen. She conducted live interviews on the show including one which featured Roger Sanchez as he worked on a track at "Strong Room Studios" in England. She also voluntarily did a weekly radio program at the University of Canada on CJAM 91.5 FM called "Steamy Windows" that featured house music by various local and international artists.

As a resident of world-renowned Club Motor, Minx opened for Basement Jaxx, Doc Martin, Cajmere, and Afrika Bambatta just to name a few. She has also played alongside Richie Hawtin, John Acquiviva, and Timmy Regisford at various venues across the country. In December 1996, Minx created Women on Wax, a collective of lady DJs from the Metro Detroit area. She then began working with promoters and DJs all over the country.

Being a featured performer during the first-ever Detroit Electronic Music Festival (D.E.M.F.) in May 2000 (with over 1.5 million people in attendance), had an incredible impact on Minx's career. Since then, she's played at Toronto's Film Lounge, Club Ohm in Portland, Deep Sugar in Baltimore, Club Air in Japan and has been featured on Much Music's Electric Circus weekly television Dance Show. Minx has shared her love of music and DJ skills with massives crowds in Paris, Berlin, Cancun, New York, Switzerland, Tokyo, Spain, Belgium and numerous other domestic and international locales.

Minx began producing music in 2001 and created her own record label - Women On Wax Recordings. Wildly successful, her label has served as a vehicle to present many talented artists and producers to the world including Diamondancer, Pirahnahead, and Diviniti. Because of her growing success in various aspects of music, she was asked to be a featured presenter at the “Roots of Techno Conference” held at Indiana University in 2006. During the conference she shared her wealth of knowledge on topics such as the history of electronic music in Detroit, efficiently running a record label, and techniques for being a successful DJ.

Currently on the Bang Tech 12 roster, Detroit’s “First Lady of Wax”is working on her 14th release on W. O.W. Recordings. Minx has also expanded her musical majesty by creating a sub-imprint of the label called W.O.W. B.A.M. (Women On Wax Bangin’ Ass Music). Besides releases on both of her labels, she also has a single on Minus. “A Walk In the Park” was remixed by Josh Wink, Matthew Dear, Magda and Ricardo Villalobos. She created “Undaground Boogie” that was featured in Richie Hawtin’s DE9 Transitions mix. She has worked out remixes for Trisomie 21 (Paris), Soiree Records (Detroit), West End Records (New York), Psychostasia Recordings (Detroit), United Music (Paris), and Whasdat Music (Detroit). Recently, Minx partnered with Jerry the Cat to establish Skyloft Productions, where the two work together to produce music for various artists in multiple genres.

Having been successful in DJing, producing, and managing flourishing record labels, one can only imagine the new heights that Minx will explore in the years to come.

Why do I bring DJ Minx up? Well, I've been trying to get her back out here for a while now. It seems like now that good old-fashioned HOUSE music is making a comeback, it might be a real possiblity. For all of your sakes, I hope we can make this happen sooner, as opposed to later. In the meantime, check out Queen Beats Radio, she show she does every Tuesday from 5-7PM EST. If you like what you hear, help me rally the troops! How you ask? By "Friending" or "Liking" any number of House promoters or club nights on Facebook (Flammable, Choice Wednesdays, etc), and request that they bring DJ Minx to town. I promise, you won't be sorry!

For more on DJ Minx, check out Women On Wax!

Now get to work! I wanna be dancing my ass off with YOU, while this diva is throwing down one of her world class sets!
