So by now most everyone has heard about the trans woman that was beaten at a McDonald's in Maryland. I have to admit I've been on the youtube to watch myself. It's completely shameful. Makes me really sad.
What makes me even sadder is this:
I watched this video of a Fox news anchor covering the story. It includes an interview with Chrissy Polis (said trans woman), and talking head support from a former prosecutor. I would not normally give a Fox video any play in my blog, but it was the comments left on this video that really irritated me.
....and here were the comments:
"that's not a woman, it's a man who's got no balls"
"this is not a hate crime... how was they supposed to know it was man.... and nobody knows the real story we only know what we seen when the recording start.... stop being quick to judge... wut about the jewish men and the black boy... that was a hate crime"
Then there was this one. This is when the internet goes terribly, terribly bad. This was over to the side as youtube does with suggestions linking one video to another. I had a feeling that it was mocking the incident. It was. I'd really love to strap on a C4 vest and give this guy a big hug. BOOM!
I don't really have more to say. Sitting down to write this blog post has actually been the first time that I've had to digest the entire situation. In doing my research, I have to admit I've kind of gotten so sick to my stomach, and a little bit depressed, that I'm not really sure I can string my words together appropriately here. When will we ever learn? When will the hating and ignorance stop? Why do I love that without the internet we might not all know about this?!?! Why do I hate that with the internet, jerks like the one in the second video, and the ones who posted those comments on the first video, get to enjoy the annonymity of hating from their private spaces, without ever having to be called to task for it?
Ugh. I need a hot bath.

Hot Mess Baby! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
Hey all! Happy Spring! Easter's tomorrow and the sun is shining and it's got me thinking about good times! A whole slew of my favorite "good time" memories were at Hot Mess, the party that D$, myself, Colby B and Julie Herrera started up at The War Room (RIP). We had a run of multiple years, so many special guests, so much good music, tons of great memories, and lots of fun one offs at other venues around town. Thought I'd compile a few from the archives to share with you! Enjoy!

This series of flyers was on fire!

Q Boy! Miss his mug!

Leslie & The Lys! This is how we go!

SEXY!

Men & Hey Willpower! Such a great show!

I love this series of collages that D$ did. If you look closely you can see quite a few peeps you might recognize in there!

I think this was the 2nd or 3rd time we brought out Cazwell:

A Little CoPro we did with the Bad Scene boys out of PDX:

This was put together to go on the back of one of D$'s first Hot Mess inspired T-Shirt Designs:

Wow, this was quite a night!

Another copro we did with Flammable:

This one looked real nice on the poles!

These guys had the hottest remixes out there at one point!

Tour with Team Gina!

Our very last Hot Mess:

Ahhhh....the memories! Happy Easter everyone! Don't eat any rotten eggs!

Spotlight On: Kook Teflon (Formerly Miss Oblivious)
She took a really rad picture of me one night when I was DJin' at Hard Times (when we were at the Re-bar), and sent it to me with some really sweet feedback. I thought that was pretty awesome. Then our paths started to cross more and more through a mutual friend (Thanks Dustin!). There was one specific moment though, when I said to myself "this chick is friggin' amazing, and I need to start paying attention"! I remember it so clearly. It was the night of the launch of issue number 6 of Hard Times. We (Qulture Qreative & Hard Times), had teamed up with Neumo's to bring Big Freedia to town. Cheyanne is one of the only people in Seattle who not only knew who Big Freedia was, but had seen the Queen Diva before on one of her frequent trips to New Orleans. She was there with Jackie Hell, they were lookin' awesome, and I just remember bouncin' and smilin' and enjoying the company (and the schooling she was giving me about the Sissy Bounce scene).
I've since realized on top of being a really bewildering force of positivity, and a creative mind that inspires my own, she's a dollmaker, 'zine publisher, mother, wife, curator, film maker, photographer, producer, promoter, and frankly, anything she wants to be. This is a woman that does not seem to be confined to any of societies expectations. She is the very definition of Queer, which is my favorite! I find that incredibly appealing. Both as a friend and an associate in business and in artistic endeavors.
She's got a ton going on, and for those of you regular visitors to my blog who don't know the wonder that is Cheyanne Payne (formerly known as Miss Oblivious, currently reborn as Kook Teflon), she agreed to answer some questions for me, to share with you, in my blog. Enjoy!
LAK: What are your influences?
KT: *Mary Ellen Pleasant,Greer Lankton,Dame Darcy,GB Jones,
Claude Cahun,Squeaky Blonde,Billie Holiday,Diane Arbus,Ginger Coyote,Salty
Dogs,tramps.
* My children and friends
*Magick,witchcraft recipes,queer pioneers,voodou rituals,ringmasters,tarot
therapy, meditation gurus, vintage jazz and experimental electro trash, marching
bands and....all the females involved with:
*1930's Art Scenes/cabaret/filth
*Storyville(New Orleans music & vintage prostitution,french quarter)
*late 1970's California (LA &SF) queer/art punk scene
LAK: What got you into making dolls? Your dolls are amazing, btw.
KT: It was never planned yet has turned into my legacy, I guess the main reason I began sewing dolls is because of Vinsantos...My queen bitch
http://vinsantosmusic.com
LAK: You do shows all over the U.S. on a regular basis. Curating, hosting, exhibiting. How did you tap into all of the relationships that make this happen?
KT: First things first I treat my art like a band we "have" to go on tour to make
it! "My dream is to not be famous, just not forgotten". PLUS-I love people and making friends, getting to know peeps that are different than me. It is something that keeps me inspired and as I am always creating new bonds I have kept all my friends throughout the last 20 years, I visit them in cities near and far, then I meet their friends and circles just keeps growing. You might find me drinking french 75's at a classy 150 year old establishment, or in a musty basement with quirky artists or making puppets with children. I make friends along the way and always keep in touch with them....I think people know when your genuine and it seems to draw them in. I am so passionate about what others are creating, other than just what "I am" doing, I LOVE LOVE LOVE bringing people together its an obsession of mine! I have varied taste in scenery which melds together well for inspiration, I am nearing 40 and still thrive on the new, young and old. My biggest fear in life is to become jaded so i try & keep it fresh with travel and an open mind....
LAK: How did Kook Teflon come to be?
KT: Miss Oblivious was exhausted, she'd done it all , seen most & really wanted to retire. You may catch Miss O. here n' there but for the most part she resides with Alabaster Choad in SF. Click here for more on that!
Kook (A person regarded as strange, eccentric, or crazy). Plus I was publishing a new zine "Teflon Sisters" which was a great fresh start! Teflon is a nickname given to persons, to whom criticism or bad luck does not seem to stick.
LAK: What was the inspiration on the pocket pussy dolls?
KT: I have sold over 50 kitty cat dolls and I felt they needed a catchy title...since they fit in your pocket and are pussy's it only made sense. Plus I have a pervy mind.
LAK: Name a couple of your top favorite things about Seattle?
KT: *CanCan *Snackhole (Jackie Hell) *PONY *Circus Contraption R.I.P *Teflon Sisters *Hard Times Press *DameBuilder (feminist collective) *Hugo House *Lonesome Shack *my beautiful, inspirational and supportive peers that have become family...
LAK: Name a couple of your least favorite things about Seattle?
KT: * non-diverse culture("its so white here")there I said it... *condos *passive-aggressive *it's too cold *people getting stuck in their circles, "venture out...far far out"
LAK: If you were hosting your dream dinner party, who would you invite?
KT: A big round table for- Martyn Jacques,John Waters, Orson Wagon, Teflon Sisters,Vinsantos, Nicholas Cage, Big Freedia, my hubby, Vockah Redu, Giovanni DiMorente, Keith Morris, Chris Snell, Armitage Shanks, Alice Bag, Paul Rubens, Stella Rose, Tim Burton, Angie Black, HARD TIMES CREW, DarbyJane, Rudolph Rasmussen, Karen L. LAK: OMG. I wanna DJ!
LAK: If you had to invite one of the following 3 people to that same dinner party who would it be, and why? Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Andrew Brightbart.
KT: Andrew so he could help me with my website..nah..wait... Sarah Palin so we could lock her in the basement were she belongs.
LAK: Would she be able to see Russia from the basement?
LAK: What's next up for Miss Cheyanne?
KT: Pastor Kaleb Easter Sunday(I am in the choir)11am at Century Ballroom + Bunny BumP (video)at FRED afterwards.

The Body Politic: Some "Sickening" Words From Michael Moore!
I recieved this ditty from the folks at Moveon.org before the weekend. For those of you who haven't seen it, I thought I would share....BEGIN LETTER:
Tax Day is coming on Monday. And Michael Moore has a message about why you should join with other MoveOn members and fellow progressive groups in Seattle to call out the big corporations who aren't paying their taxes while programs to create jobs and help the needy get cut.
Dear Moveon Member,
Do you wonder (like I do) what the tax accountants and executives are doing over at GE this weekend? Frantically rushing to fill out their IRS returns like the rest of us? Hardly. They're taking the weekend off to throw themselves a big party and have a hearty laugh at all of us. It must really crack them up to see us like suckers scurrying around to make sure we report everything to Uncle Sam—and even send him a check, if necessary.
The joke's on us, folks. GE and tons of other corporations will have a tax bill for 2010 of ZERO. GE had $14.2 billion in profits in 2010. Yet they will contribute NOTHING to the federal government while every last dime is soaked from us.1
In the latest budget deal, our politicians could have tackled the deficit by stopping the flow of these ill-gotten billions to corporations. Instead they cut billions from "wasteful" programs that do "wasteful" things, like create new jobs, drive economic growth, and help the needy and our nation's children. It's Democracy in reverse and it sickens me.
GE spends $20 million a year to lobby Congress to throw themselves this party.2 But do you know what speaks louder than $20 million? 20 million votes! 20 million people, and more, standing together and taking to the streets. That starts now, with you.
This Monday, MoveOn members—along with union, community, and environmental allies—will gather outside the headquarters and local offices of the biggest corporate tax dodgers to deliver tax bills from the American people. And we'll demand that our leaders make these corporate deadbeats pay.
We're doing this because we don't buy into the Big Lie: that greedy teachers caused the crash on Wall Street! That the selfish firefighters sent millions of jobs overseas! That pregnant woman, infants, and children are sending us into deficit!
No, it was the big corporations that did this. It was the CEOs and the top 1% of the country. THEY brought on the mortgage crisis. THEY made off with trillions of dollars from our economy. THEY are systematically destroying the middle class. And THEY have bought and sold the very people elected to represent us!
This Monday we will call them out—can you join in?
On Monday, we will have something to say to Exxon, Chevron, and the big banks that crashed our economy and got billions in bailouts, like Citigroup and Bank of America, who pay little or no federal income tax. In fact, the IRS will likely give them a tax REBATE.3 If that doesn't boggle your mind then nothing will.
The Tax Day events are about sending this message: We are coming after you, we are stopping you and we are going to return the money, jobs, and homes you stole from the people. This is your tipping point, Corporate America. And I, for one, am glad it's going to happen this Monday.
If you've never been to an event like this before, this is the time. And don't go alone, because none of us can win this fight by ourselves. Plus, it's more fun and exciting to go along with friends and family to be part of real democracy in action—not the store-bought kind Big Business gets on Capitol Hill.
I really hope you can make it. Click here to RSVP:
http://pol.moveon.org/event/events/event.html?event_id=114146&id=26978-3815673-efSOEkx&t=5
This is our chance, my friends. Take the time on Monday to make your voice heard. I can guarantee you I will. Please join me.
Sincerely,
Michael Moore

Their Bleepin' Rad, I Love Them, & You Will Too!!!
I met these ladies last September when I went down to play at Gaycation, the party that Mr Charming puts together on a monthly basis with DJ Snowtiger at the lovely Holocene. It was a magical night. The only kind of magical night that can begin at Sassy's (the strip club across the street). One of those nights when the music is perfect, the crowd is into what you're throwing out there, and the head bitches in charge, a> know what they are doing, and b> are cool as hell. This lovely gal named Katey Pants befriended us and became our posse's cruise director for the evening(and a delightful one at that). Only later did we discover that she was not only a DJ herself (with her own righteous accomplishments and projects), but she was the lady of one of my hosts, Mr. Charming. The parties these ladies are involved in are some of the most outstanding events in Queer Portlandia. I have mad respect for them not only as artists, but as friends. They know how to throw down the jams that keep the pulse alive on the dancefloor, and their excitment and energy emanates from the sound system, deep into the dancefloor. Pure, unadulterated magic. So, the long and the short of it is, that you have a chance to peep these ladies THIS FRIDAY NIGHT for Girl4Girl's event at The Century Ballroom. If they bring even a third of what I know they are capable of, that place will be on fire! ...and these gals don't do things a third of the way. They take you all the way home baby. Trust!
A little background on these ladies:
MR CHARMING (Mary McAllister)- Mr. Charming has been organizing, promoting, and DJ'ing in since 2005. Their most notable night- Gaycation is a monthly queer night in PDX that is one of the towns longest running dance parties just having it's 5th Anniversary in February. Gaycation has consistently brought a super hot, all inclusive homo dance party; featuring local and international performers; and is now a staple of PDX queer night life. Mr. Charming is also resident at one of PDX's largest dance parties- Blow Pony and at Blow Pony's sister-night- Butt Plug Klub.
ROY G BIV (Katey Pants)- Roy G Biv has been the main organizer, promoter, and DJ for BENT- a dark, dirty and damn good dance party. Voted as North Portlands best kept gay secrets (pdx mercury) and best night of 2010 (qpdx) BENT has consistently brought the heat. BENT- a night for queers and their admirers seeks to build social nights that are anti-racist, body-positive, sex positive, and queer-as fun. Roy G Biv is also resident at one of PDX's largest dance parties- Blow Pony and at Blow Pony's sister-night- Butt Plug Klub.
Roy G Biv and Mr. Charming are also very much in love.
Miss Oblivious, aka Kook Teflon will also be on hand displaying and selling her wares, including her limited edition zines, and her fantastically amazing Pocket Pussy Dolls!
Another tidbit of information just released: Girl4Girl is offering $5 cover until 11:30PM. This means if you scoot your hot little asses over well before 11:30, you are going to get in for HALF PRICE! That's right, HALF PRICE ladies! That's a helluva deal if you ask my jaded ass!
More exciting announcements are slated to come out before Friday! Stay Tuned....and MARK YOUR CALENDARS! This will be YOUR LAST CHANCE to experience Girl4Girl until the June 25th show with DJ Spinderella at Baltic Room, so come and get your fix!
I know where I'm gonna be on Friday!

Our poster for the CD Release of Luxury A.K. appears about 20 pages in. Click here to take a gander!
The Body Politic
Every once in a while, I have to take a time out and post about my other passion: Politics. It's my dirty little secret, for which I have no shame. My girlfriend loves to out me to people, "you'd think as a DJ she would listen to music all the time, but really, it's news and talk radio". This is true. My favorites happen to be listening to AM 1090, Seattle's Progressive Talk. With a line-up that boasts Bill Press, Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartman, NorMAN GoldMAN, Ed Schultz, Randi Rhodes, and Mike Malloy, there's plenty of points of view amongst these folk. Some make you laugh, some make you cry, and mostly, they all make you THINK. Which, honestly, is something that I worry we collectively don't do enough of these days. If people don't start waking up and taking notice, we are literally going to become a 3rd world country (don't laugh, I'm serious). Some things stuck in my craw as of late:KISS MY GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN!
Well, it seems, for now anyway, that we have managed to avoid a government shutdown. Unless you’re a Republican, or fancy yourself a Tea Partier (DOUCHE!), in which case you're probably crying in your cheerios because you failed to cause a government shutdown. The "deal" was announced with a little over an hour remaining on the clock before government would have had to shut down. Suddenly the conservatives had to put away all their libations and cancel the entertainment. They never got to have their “death to government” party, with Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin popping out the cake. President Obama announced the deal with the Washington Monument in the background, saying it would stay lit up (which had hundreds of tourists who had already purchased tickets to tons of historic Washington monuments and museums, breathing a collective sigh). The first announcement about the deal came from Speaker John Boehner (and I am among those who pronounce that "BONER"). Boehner announced the deal shortly before 11pm EST. Do you have any idea how hard it is for John Boehner to avoid being visibly drunk by 11PM at night? He probably left that announcement and desperately raced back to his office so that he could reattach himself to his Merlot I.V. drip.
Long live the government, I say, with my voice dripping with sarchasm. At least our military families will continue collecting their checks. Which is the least that they deserve, for fighting not 1, or 2, but 3 official conflicts overseas.
F**KING THE UNIONS MEANS F**KING US ALL
The battle between unions, progressive groups, and Wisconsin Republican Governor Scott Walker is not over. Not by a long shot. A county judge recently blocked "publication" of Walker's anti-union legislation, saying it was possible Senate Republicans violated Wisconsin's rigorous open records law when they rammed through a vote on his bill to do away with the collective bargaining rights of state workers. The case could end up before the state Supreme Court. But that didn't stop the state's Legislative Reference Bureau from publishing Walker's bill anyway, touching off another round of arguing about the tactics used to make the bill into law. As of this writing, its actual status remains unclear. If a judge does force a new vote, it's unlikely the outcome will change, though even that's not certain.
Either way, the meaning of Madison, and also of what similar governors are doing amid similar turmoil in Columbus, Indianapolis, and other Midwestern cities, remains to be seen. Without the ability to bargain collectively, unions may indeed be fatally weakened. So, you could argue that the wave of attacks by conservative governors will gut public-sector unions in those states, if not wipe them out entirely.
On the other hand, those same efforts have mobilized startling numbers of ordinary citizens, young and old, educated and not, in a way none of us have seen since perhaps the 1930s. I know this for a fact. I was there in Madison and watched hundreds of thousands of protesters brave the numbing cold while jamming the streets to demand that Governor Walker back down. The events in Madison radicalized many young people who kept the flame of protest burning with their live-ins inside the Wisconsin State Capitol.
What remains to be seen is whether the new spark lit by the Republican Party's latest crusade against unions can in some way fill the space left by those unions which, nationwide, stare down their own demise.
NO MORE BECK AND CALL BOY?
The demise of Glenn Beck’s Fox News show comes at the same time as the economic recovery is picking up steam. Those two things are connected. And that’s the only possible connection in the universe that Glenn Beck has never made. Glenn Beck cried “wolf!” too many times. Then he made a fool of himself trying to connect the wolf to George Soros. Beck has also been telling his minions to hoard food. From the looks of Glenn, he’s been taking his own advice. He’s been hoarding it in his cheeks, like some kind of paranoid chipmunk.
HACKING FOR NEWS?
To nobody’s surprise, a Rupert Murdoch property is being accused of hacking, though it’s not the sort of “hack” you usually associate with media outlets that are run by Rupert Murdoch. Rupert’s British tabloid, the News of the World, admits that it hacked into the phone lines and voicemails of high-profile figures. That has to be the only research that anybody in Rupert Murdoch’s empire has ever done. Really guys, why are you eavesdropping on people to get information? Do what your mates at Fox News in the US do, and just make the stuff up from scratch.
ACK! This is all about enough to make my head spin. Meanwhile, BP is firing up the engines on drilling in the Gulf Of Mexico, which we all know is a brilliant idea (again, sarchasm), and Japan continues to experience aftershocks and tsunami warnings, al the while radiation is LEAKING INTO THE OCEAN. Oh man, it's barely Noon 30 and I need a cocktail....
Happy Monday Kids!

Pike St., Seattle), is a night for fag hags (ladies that love themselves some gay boys), dyke tykes (guys that pal around with ladies who love ladies) & fruit-flies (straight people that like to hang with the queers)! In short COME AS YOU ARE! The dance floor will be flooded with all kinds of party jams! There’s something for all!
This month’s installment of LEZBRO features special guest: Fannie Mae Darling (PDX). Fannie Mae Darling was born in a little amish town in Indiana. As she grew up, she knew she was different from the other little girls. During Rumspringa, Fannie took off to the big city and never looked back. She joined the world famous acting, comedy troupe SissyBoy and later went on to her solo career. She's starred in several movies, and was featured in the documentary about Sissyboy, which toured and was featured across the country and won Best Documentary/Special Jury Award in the Salem Film Festival. She performs often in her home city and other planets as well. She is also the co-owner of Mars. She’s the beefiest, sexiest, sweetest, prettiest tranny from that side of the yellow line in Portland Oregon.

A continuous visual display will be shown each month, compliments of Mr. JT Hooker of 12hr notice.
The Wildrose also offers super economical (and by that, we mean CHEAP) cover charge – a mere $3, as well as some incredibly unbelievable drink specials (varies from night to night). This makes Lezbro hard to pass up! So come early for your pre-funk, stumble in late for your wrap-up, or stay all night and don’t miss a thing – but GET THERE!
See you tomorrow!!!

This week I have a little housey goodness to share with you, compliments of DJ Transport. Word on the street is that he will be rocking the decks at The Chapel this coming Saturday night (April 9th). So if you like what you hear, be sure to stop by The Chapel and catch him live and direct! Click here to listen and download Sassy by DJ Transport!

JT Hooker Takes On Galore!
Two great tastes that taste great together! That's what I was thinkin' yesterday when I was listening to the most recent Galore Podcast which featured a guest spot by my pal JT Hooker of 12hr notice.
I really enjoy the Galore Podcast (founded by cutey-patooty's Pakio & Matt). David "D$" Richey and I were guests back when we were still throwing Hot Mess at the now defunct War Room. We had a blast. Totally cute, funny, relevant, community oriented, gay-ass little internet radio show. It pretty much rates a bomb.com rating from me. If you haven't heard the podcast, you should check it out by clicking here! There are many episodes to choose from, and I guarantee your enjoyment!
JT Hooker has had a special place in my heart ever since I stumbled outside to have a smoke one night during Hard Times and found him manning his cart, dropping some slick beats and making our party even better by projecting visuals on the wall outside the venue. Since then, we've become great friends. I really appreciate the support he's shown for many projects I'm involved with. He's got an eye toward the ecclectic, and always brings that extra whammy whether it's through a DJ set, or his amazing visual installments.

Not Only Can She Mix Like A Master, And Beat A Mean Face, But The Girl Designs Jewelry TOO! WHAT?!?!
OMG. This post is looooong overdue. So, I'm not sure if I have mentioned her here in my BLOG, but if I haven't, and you live in Seattle, you've probably seen her rockin' the decks at one of her gigs. ...or maybe you've seen a face she's beaten(read: "make-up she's done", for those of you who don't speak tranese). Who am I speaking of you ask??? None other than my homegirl, DJ Mixxtress. Now DJ Mixxtress and I go aways back. At least one scandalous breakup ago! I have mad love in my heart for this girl. As a friend she's been amazing and has made me smile and laugh at times when it felt like nothing could. As a DJ I have seen her grow leaps and bounds. Establishing herself with a skill set that evades many (this girl can cut a bitch on the 1's and 2's). Click this link to see what I am talking about.
She also picked up make-up artistry more than a minute ago, and she really does beat a mean face. She made me feel REAL pretty for my first solo appearance in support of the release of my E.P. "The Eyes Of Laura Kendall" at Chapel months back. Miss thing WORKS IT.
As if all this talent and creativity wasn't enough bestowed on one, single person, would you believe she also designs jewelry? I wouldn't believe it myself, except that she sent me a SLAMMIN' pair of silver-mirror, lightning bolt earrings, that are so fuckin' amazing, I haven't had a gig yet that was hot enough to trot these babies out! I'm thinkin' they'll make their debut over Pride weekend.
So, full disclosure: I have been meaning to blog about this for weeks. Only today did I find myself with the time and attention required to devote to checking out her Etsy store and some of her videos so I could make an informed post. Well, when I was checking things out, I found something even more fabulous, which I will be purchasing STAT, or once the next paycheck rolls in the door. Check this out:
Awesome, right? That's what I think too! If you are interested in learning more about DJ Mixxtress, click on one of the links below:

Once you dive into the world of DJ Mixxtress, I know you'll love her just as much as I do!
